Louis Theroux - Weird Weekends & When Louis Met ...
Posted On 20 Dec 2007 at at 01:36 by somewhereIn Weird Weekends, Louis followed marginal, mostly American subcultures like survivalists, gangsta rappers, Nazi Skinheads and porn stars, often by living among or close to the people involved. Often, Theroux's documentary method subtly exposes the contradictions or farcical elements of some seriously-held beliefs. Theroux himself describes the aim of the series as
“ Setting out to discover the genuinely odd in the most ordinary setting. To me, it's almost a privilege to be welcomed into these communities and to shine a light on them and, maybe, through my enthusiasm, to get people to reveal more of themselves than they may have intended. The show is laughing at me, adrift in their world, as much as at them. I don't have to play up that stuff. I'm not a matinee idol disguised as a nerd. ”
In When Louis Met…, Theroux accompanied a different British celebrity in each programme as they went about their day-to-day business, interviewing them about their lives and experiences as he did so. His episode about the DJ and charity fundraiser Sir Jimmy Savile When Louis Met Jimmy was voted one of the top fifty documentaries of all time in a survey by Britain's Channel Four. In When Louis Met the Hamiltons, the disgraced Tory MP Neil Hamilton and his wife Christine were arrested following false allegations of indecent assault during the course of filming.

"Statistics show that taking LSD is no more dangerous than signing up for a four year course at Harvard College" - Timothy Leary
Back in the 1960's a former Harvard professor stopped giving A's, B's and C's and started handing out LSD. his name was tomothy Leary and he was at the center of a controversy in North America over the growing use of psychedelic drugs. Leary ran a research center in New York state where young people took 'acid' while he took notes. The media took notice.
Flowers of Darkness - A History of the Poppy
Flowers of Darkness is an unflinching, no-nonsense look at the opium trade - where it happens, how it is transported, and it's ultimate effects on the world community. With footage direct from the fields of Afghanistan to the streets of the ghetto, the reach and power of the poppy was as powerful in the early 1970's when this film was made, as it is now, with the comeback of the Taliban fueled by the bumper opium crop of 2007.

Reform organizations, prohibitionist groups, politicians, drug war critics, scientists, and celebrities all get their say in this fascinating analysis.
Hunter S Thompson - Where The Buffalo Roam
Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision: Hunter S. Thompson 1978 BBC Documentary
Hunter S Thompson and long time artistic collaborator Ralph Steadman are filmed as they travel to Los Angeles for an early planning meeting about the movie Where The Buffalo Roam. Fascinating for any fan of Fear and Loathing is Las Vegas, as Johnny Depp studied the footage in order to better adopt Thompson's mannerisms. There is also a detailed description of Thomspon's elaborate funeral plans, realized in 2005, involving a fist-shaped obelisk.
What the Bleep Do We Know?
Posted On 19 Dec 2007 at at 23:53 by somewhereWhat the Bleep Do We Know!? is a controversial 2004 film that combines documentary interviews and a fictional narrative to posit a connection between science and spirituality.
Topics discussed in the film include neurology, quantum physics, psychology, epistemology, ontology, metaphysics, magical thinking and spirituality. The film intersperses interviews with experts in science[citation needed] and spirituality with the fictional story of a deaf photographer as she struggles with her situation. Computer-animated graphics are featured heavily in the film. Bleep was directed by William Arntz, Betsy Chasse and Mark Vicente, members of Ramtha's School of Enlightenment, and the film features extensive interviews with the school's director Judy Zebra Knight. A number of scientists believe aspects of the movie cross the line into pseudoscience, and David Albert, one of the scientists featured in the movie, says that his views were intentionally misrepresented.

Filmed on location in Portland, Oregon, What the Bleep Do We Know blends a fictional story line, documentary-style discussion, and computer animation to present a viewpoint of the physical universe and human life within it, with connections to neuroscience and quantum physics. Some ideas discussed in the film are:
The universe is best seen as constructed from thought (or ideas) rather than from substance.
What has long been considered "empty space" is anything but empty. see Dark energy
Our beliefs about who we are and what is real are not simply observations, but rather form ourselves and our realities.
Peptides manufactured in the brain can cause a bodily reaction to an emotion, resulting in a new perspective to old adages such as "think positively" and "be careful what you wish for."
In the narrative segments of the movie, Marlee Matlin portrays Amanda, a deaf photographer who acts as the viewer's avatar as she experiences her life from startlingly new and different perspectives.
In the documentary segments of the film, experts in quantum physics, biology, medicine, psychiatry, and theology, along with spiritual commentators, discuss the roots and meaning of Amanda's experiences. The comments focus primarily on a single theme: We create our own reality.
According to Publishers Weekly, the movie was one of the sleeper hits of 2004, as "word-of-mouth and strategic marketing kept it in theaters for an entire year." The gross exceeded $10 million, a good showing for a low-budget documentary in which, they say, "scientists discuss the ramifications of recent discoveries in quantum physics and neuroscience."
The critics offered fairly mixed reviews as seen on the movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.Dave Kehr of the New York Times described in his review of the movie, the "transition from quantum mechanics to cognitive therapy" as "plausible", but went on to state that "the subsequent leap—from cognitive therapy into large, hazy spiritual beliefs—isn't as effectively executed. Suddenly people who were talking about subatomic particles are alluding to alternate universes and cosmic forces, all of which can be harnessed in the interest of making Ms. Matlin's character feel better about her thighs."
According to Physics Today, the film invokes quantum physics to promote pseudoscience. The article also states "the movie illustrates the uncertainty principle with a bouncing basketball being in several places at once. There's nothing wrong with that. It's recognized as pedagogical exaggeration. But the movie gradually moves to quantum "insights" that lead a woman to toss away her antidepressant medication, to the quantum channeling of Ramtha, the 35,000-year-old Atlantis god, and on to even greater nonsense."
John Gorenfeld reports that three directors are devotees of Ramtha's School of Enlightenment and JZ Knight/Ramtha.
The Guardian Unlimited published an article summarizing the reactions to the film by some British scientists. Richard Dawkins states that "the authors seem undecided whether their theme is quantum theory or consciousness. Both are indeed mysterious, and their genuine mystery needs none of the hype with which this film relentlessly and noisily belabours us", concluding that the film is "tosh". Professor Clive Greated writes that "thinking on neurology and addiction are covered in some detail but, unfortunately, early references in the film to quantum physics are not followed through, leading to a confused message". He also questions whether modern physics cannot be married with institutional religion as the film implies. Simon Singh called it pseudoscience, and said the suggestion "that if observing water changes its molecular structure, and if we are 90% water, then by observing ourselves we can change at a fundamental level via the laws of quantum physics" was "ridiculous balderdash." According to Dr Joao Migueijo, reader in theoretical physics at Imperial College, the film deliberately misquotes science.
An article published by Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports that Associate Professor Zdenka Kuncik, Professor Peter Schofield and Professor Max Colthear have criticised the film's ideas that quantum mechanics means an observer can consciously affect reality, saying: "The observer effect of quantum physics isn't about people or reality. It comes from the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and it's about the limitations of trying to measure the position and momentum of subatomic particles... this only applies to sub-atomic particles - a rock doesn't need you to bump into it to exist. It's there. The sub-atomic particles that make up the atoms that make up the rock are there too." The article also discusses Hagelin's experiment with Transcendental Meditation and the Washington D.C rate of violent crime, noting that "the number of murders actually went up," comments on the film's use of the ten percent myth.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the Fortean times have both discussed the story of the Native American's "perceptual blindness" to European ships. Both agree that there is a real psychological phenomenon of perceptual blindness, but find the historical details of the account given in the film to be unconvincing. The Fortean Times concludes that the story originated with Captain Cook. *Wikipedia

Cannabis Now Worse Than The Nazis
Posted On 12 Dec 2007 at at 09:52 by somewhereCANNABIS is now more evil than the Nazis and smoking the drug is worse for the brain than watching Richard Madeley on television, new research suggests.
In the Seventies and Eighties marijuana briefly became totally harmless and could be smoked by future Cabinet ministers up to the rank of Home Secretary without any effect on their brains whatsoever.
However, a massive increase in the strength of the drug since politicians all stopped using it has now made it more nasty and brutish than the combined evil of the Third Reich.Professor Tom Booker, head of drug research at Glasgow’s Clyde University and the man who conducted the latest lengthy study into the drug, said: “Yeah, whatever.”A spokesman for the University said: “The Nazi’s were very bad people but even they could not make a middle class white boy adopt dreadlocks for a hairstyle, or make a highly intelligent middle aged man crawl around the floor of his laboratory in his underpants weeping with laughter about nothing at all, and then eat his own weight in marshmallows.”Following the promotion of cannabis to the top spot in the evilness rankings the top ten most evil things in the world are:
1. (-) Cannabis
2.(2) Tobacco
3.(4) Debt consolidation ads featuring Carol Vorderman
= 5. (1) Richard and Judy
= 5. (3) The Nazis
6. (-) Heathrow Airport
7. (5) Prince Phillip
8. (7) Joseph Stalin

Fcuk Nativity Plays, We're Doing 'The Godfather', Say Five Year-Olds
Posted On at at 09:47 by somewhereTHE number of primary schools ditching the traditional Christmas nativity in favour of key scenes from The Godfather is at an all-time high.
According to the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations, a majority of five year-olds would now prefer to recreate the meeting between the Heads of the Five Families instead of the birth of Jesus.Dylan Stephenson, a year one pupil at St Bald's in Northampton said: "I'm playing Sonny because Miss Hayes reckons I'm a bit of a hot-head. Bada-bing! "In the play my friend Ben Holdsworth calls my little sister a 'guinea brat' so I come on and hit him over the head with a dustbin lid. Miss Hayes says it will be very powerful."
Dylan added: "My friend Charlie is playing Sollozzo the Turk because he went to Cyrpus on his holidays and told us all about it. He gets shot in the face."And my friend Jack Barnes is going to be Luca Brasi because he's a big fatty tum-tum."Jack admitted he was intrigued by the role of the Corleones' faithful enforcer, adding: "I'm going to sleep with the fishies!"
Church leaders have expressed disappointment at the secular nature of The Godfather, but said they took some consolation from a year-on-year increase in the number of schools performing the crucifix scene from The Exorcist.

The World Trade Center was built on revolutionary design principles. It turned conventional architectural and structural techniques on their head. Built from a thin web of steel, its design was efficient, cost-effective and would inspire a new wave in modern building techniques. The result was two towers that were both lightweight and strong. When they were completed they were the tallest in the world. They were also milestones of architecture for another reason. The two towers were the first skyscrapers explicitly designed to withstand being hit by a jet plane
The Secret Of El Dorado
New evidence that advanced societies flourished in the Amazon Basin before the arrival of Europeans. It was the most notorious wild-goose chase in history: the Conquistadors’ search for El Dorado, a fabulous kingdom of gold that Indians said lay hidden in the jungles of the Amazon Basin. But now, at last, archaeologists have uncovered the truth behind that myth. They have found evidence of a huge society, as advanced as the Egyptians or the Incas, right in the heart of the rainforest. And this is more than the story of a lost world rediscovered
The Mystery of the Human Hobbit
Is the hobbit a new human species or nothing more than a modern human with a crippling deformity? On the far-flung island of Flores, in the Indonesian archipelago, a team of archaeologists happened upon a tiny 18,000-year old skeleton. It was no more than a metre tall. They assumed they have found the remains of a young girl. But other signs suggested she was in fact much older. They had discovered one of the smallest human adults ever found.
The Lost Pyramids Of Caral
The magnificent ancient city of pyramids at Caral in Peru hit the headlines in 2001. The site is a thousand years older than the earliest known civilisation in the Americas and, at 2,627 BC, is as old as the pyramids of Egypt. Many now believe it is the fabled missing link of archaeology - a 'mother city'. If so, then these extraordinary findings could finally answer one of the great questions of archaeology: why did humans become civilised?

Psychedelic science
In the late 1960s, human experiments with psychedelic drugs were brought to a halt. Government reacted to the anarchy of the hippy ... all » counter-culture. The drug-crazed Charles Manson slayings came to symbolise public fear of the street use of LSD. Funding ceased, and the few researchers who battled on were ostracised. But lost in the blanket ban were remarkable research projects in the field of psychiatry that held out new hope for the treatment of schizophrenia and alcoholism. Bill Eagles' extraordinary film tells the story of a handful of dedicated scientists who have struggled to make psychedelic research respectable again.
Global Dimming
Global dimming is the gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth's surface that was observed for several decades after the start of systematic measurements in 1950s. It is thought to have been caused by an increase in particulates such as sulfur aerosols in the atmosphere due to human action. The effect varies by location, but worldwide it has been estimated to be of the order of a 4% reduction over the three decades from 1960–1990. The trend reversed during the past decade.
Project Poltergeist
This is the story of two genuine scientific heroes. For forty years, John Bahcall and Ray Davis were engaged in a single extraordinary ... all » experiment - to find out why the Sun shines. Posted On 4 Dec 2007 at at 23:06 by somewhereAn autistic savant (historically described as idiot savant) is a person with both autism and savant syndrome. Savant syndrome describes a person having a severe developmental or mental handicap with extraordinary mental abilities not found in most people. This means a lower than average general intelligence (IQ) but very high narrow intelligence in one or more fields. Savant syndrome skills involve striking feats of memory and arithmetic calculation and sometimes include unusual abilities in art or music. Savant syndrome is sometimes abbreviated as "savantism", and individuals with the syndrome are often nicknamed savants. This can be a source of confusion since a savanter is a person of learning, especially one of great knowledge in a particular subject. *wikipedia

Yellow Submarine (1968)
The singing group, The Beatles, at the height of their popularity, made this cartoon of a land that is taken over by the Blue Meanies. They are recruited by an escapee to come and bring joy (and music) back to the land. The techniques are quite psychedelic in the cartoons and much care was taken to have the walks and mannerisms of the individual Beatles cartoons match the originals.

Church Abuse In The Catholic Church
Posted On 26 Nov 2007 at at 01:05 by somewhereWatch two documentaries revealing the truth about child abuse in the Catholic Church.
Sex Crimes And The Vatican
A BBC documentary of the investigation into allegations that a secret church directive, (Download Here)issued by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI, is being used to silence the victims of child sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests. Colm O'Gorman, who was raped as a 14-year-old boy by his local parish priest in Ireland, travels to America, Brazil and the Vatican City to uncover more.
Deliver Us From Evil
A Academy Award-nominated documentary film directed by Amy Berg which tells the true story of the pedophile Catholic priest Oliver O'Grady, who sexually abused potentially hundreds of children between the late 1970s and early 1990s. The film won the Best Documentary Award at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival. The title refers to a line in the Lord's Prayer, or the "Our Father."
Sex Crimes And The Vatican
A secret document which sets out a procedure for dealing with child sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church is examined by Panorama.
Crimen Sollicitationis was enforced for 20 years by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became the Pope.It instructs bishops on how to deal with allegations of child abuse against priests and has been seen by few outsiders.Critics say the document has been used to evade prosecution for sex crimes.
Crimen Sollicitationis was written in 1962 in Latin and given to Catholic bishops worldwide who are ordered to keep it locked away in the church safe.It instructs them how to deal with priests who solicit sex from the confessional. It also deals with "any obscene external act ... with youths of either sex."
It imposes an oath of secrecy on the child victim, the priest dealing with the allegation and any witnesses.Breaking that oath means excommunication from the Catholic Church.
Reporting for Panorama, Colm O'Gorman finds seven priests with child abuse allegations made against them living in and around the Vatican City. One of the priests, Father Joseph Henn, has been indicted on 13 molestation charges brought by a grand jury in the United States.
During filming for Sex Crimes and the Vatican, Colm finds Father Henn is fighting extradition orders from inside the headquarters of this religious order in the Vatican. The Vatican has not compelled him to return to America to face the charges against him.
After filming, Father Henn lost his fight against extradition but fled the headquarters and is believed to be hiding in Italy while there is an international warrant for his arrest.
Colm O'Gorman was raped by a Catholic priest in the diocese of Ferns in County Wexford in Ireland when he was 14 years old.Father Fortune was charged with 66 counts of sexual, indecent assault and another serious sexual offence relating to eight boys but he committed suicide on the eve of his trial.
Colm started an investigation with the BBC in March 2002 which led to the resignation of Dr Brendan Comiskey, the bishop leading the Ferns Diocese.Colm then pushed for a government inquiry which led to the Ferns Report. It was published in October 2005 and found: "A culture of secrecy and fear of scandal that led bishops to place the interests of the Catholic Church ahead of the safety of children."
The Catholic Church has 50 million children in its worldwide congregation and no universal child protection policy although in the UK there is the Catholic Office for the Protection of Children & Vulnerable Adults.
In some countries this means that the Crimen Sollicitationis is the only policy followed.
The Vatican has refused repeated requests from Panorama to respond to any of the cases shown in the film.Taken From The BBC Website
Deliver Us From Evil
Deliver Us from Evil (2006) is an Academy Award-nominated documentary film directed by Amy Berg which tells the true story of the pedophile Catholic priest Oliver O'Grady, who sexually abused potentially hundreds of children between the late 1970s and early 1990s. The film won the Best Documentary Award at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival. The title refers to a line in the Lord's Prayer, or the "Our Father."
The film chronicles O'Grady's years as a priest in Northern California, where he committed his crimes. After being convicted and serving seven years in prison, O'Grady was deported to Ireland, where Amy Berg interviewed him in 2005. O'Grady speaks candidly about his crimes. Additionally, the film presents trial documents, videotaped depositions, and interviews with activists, theologians, psychologists and lawyers which suggest that not only were Church officials aware of O'Grady's crimes, they actively took steps to conceal them.

Monty Python And The Holy Grail

Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
The movie starts out with Arthur, King of the Britons, looking for knights to sit with him at Camelot. He finds many knights including Sir Galahad the pure, Sir Lancelot the brave, the quiet Sir Bedevere, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. They do not travel on horses, but pretend they do and have their servants bang coconuts to make the sound of horse's hooves. Through satire of certain events in history (witch trials, the black plague) they find Camelot, but after literally a quick song and dance they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God (who seems to be grumpy) come to them from a cloud and tells them to find the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. While they search for the Grail, scenes of the knight's tales appear and why they have the name they have. Throughout their search they meet interesting people and knights along the way. Most of the characters die; some through a killer rabbit (which they defeat with the holy hand grenade), others from not answering a question right from the bridge of Death, or die some other ridiculous way. In the end, King Arthur and Sir Bedevere are left and find the Castle Arrrghhh where the Holy Grail is. They are met by some French soldiers who taunted them earlier in the film, so they were not able to get into the castle.

Too Much Drugs Or Not Enough?
Posted On at at 20:10 by somewhereAfter over a decade of rising drug use, Europe may now be entering a more stable phase, says the EU drugs agency, the EMCDDA. Not only are there signs that heroin use and drug injecting have become generally less common, but new data suggest that levels of cannabis use may now be stabilising after a sustained period of growth. Nevertheless, positive messages are marred by high levels of drug-related deaths and rising cocaine use. These comments come today as the agency launches its 2007 Annual report on the state of the drugs problem in Europe in Brussels.... Download (PDF)
Hallucinogenic mushrooms were among the first psychoactive substances consumed by man. But today they present us with a new dilemma’, says EMCDDA Director Wolfgang Götz in the latest edition in the agency’s policy briefing series Drugs in focus out today.
Entitled Hallucinogenic mushrooms: the challenge of responding to naturally occurring substances in an electronic age, the briefing raises questions such as: ‘How to effectively regulate such a complex group of naturally occurring products?’ ‘How to apply controls when they are promoted and sold globally via the Internet?’ and ‘What can be done when regulatory actions may simply result in suppliers switching to alternative and possibly even more damaging products?’ ....Download (PDF)
If Gordon Brown Could Rap!

If Gordon Brown could Rap this is how bad it would be.....The Singapore government, which has attracted considerable notoriety for strict censorship of movies and other media, has surprisingly produced a hit rap video that it has posted on YouTube. According to Reuters, the video, posted by Singapore's Media Development Authority, had received 11,000 hits by Thursday. The video features a number of corporate-executive types using rap-video gestures and "singing" lyrics extolling the advantages of doing business in Singapore. It cuts away to a number of actual corporate executives who contribute their own verses to the "song."
Jellyfish Invade Scotland
Posted On at at 19:26 by somewhere
A call has gone out to beachcombers, fish farmers, boatmen and anyone else on Scotland's coast to prepare for the invasion of the jellyfish.
Earlier this week it was revealed the invaders had choked Northern Ireland's only fish farm, killing 100,000 fish and causing £1 million of damage Today it was reported around 140,000 young salmon have been killed north of Belfast and around 15 miles from a the first incident. Now huge numbers of the stinging baby jellyfish are swarming in Scottish waters and yesterday the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) launched a recruitment drive for volunteer sentries on our beaches to maintain a lookout...... They are to report amy sighting of these unseasonal blooms as part of a national surveillance operation, the MCS Jellyfish Survey.
This month MCS has already received reports of millions of baby mauve stinger and compass jellyfish occurring off Skye, the Isle of Eigg, as well as off Ullapool and Durness in Sutherland.
"It is quite unusual for this number of juvenile jellyfish to be occurring in UK waters at this time of year," said Anne Saunders, MCS Scottish Projects Officer.
"But these blooms are phenomenal and consist of millions of individuals, being washed here by strong Atlantic currents."
While compass jellyfish are common throughout UK waters during the summer, mauve stingers are relatively uncommon and are usually only occasionally recorded in the southwest. Both can sting.
In recent years the mauve stinger has bloomed in vast numbers in the Mediterranean, presenting a significant bathing hazard to holidaymakers.
The latest reports of the jellyfish invasion came from Durness in the north west of Sutherland last week, when a Highland Council Ranger reported thousands of compass jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella) washing ashore on Balnakeil Beach after gale force winds.
Before that, MCS received reports of huge blooms of baby mauve stingers (Pelagia noctiluca) off Skye in early November, followed by reports of mass compass jellyfish strandings on the Isle of Eigg.
Last week a fisherman reported more huge blooms of small mauve stingers in Ullapool harbour and around the nearby Summer Isles.
Similarly large swarms of juvenile mauve stinger jellyfish have been recorded off the coasts of Ireland and Northern Ireland since the end of October, and eventually they mounted their attack on the Antrim coast fish farm.
MCS is asking Scottish fish farmers in particular to be vigilant.
Ms Saunders said: "We are urging fish farmers to report any jellyfish blooms they encounter to MCS, through our Fish Farmers Wildlife Reporting Scheme.
"Jellyfish swarms can impact on fish and shellfish farms, and while the conditions causing these current events remain unclear, such swarms may become more prevalent in Scottish waters as a result of climate change.
"Therefore, the MCS Jellyfish Survey could prove to be a useful tool in monitoring this situation."
Over 4,500 jellyfish encounters have been reported since the MCS Jellyfish Survey was launched in 2003. The survey data will be fully analysednext year in collaboration with the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology & Conservation, but initial analysis of these public reports is already showing interesting differences in the distribution of the six larger jellyfish species around Britain.
MCS recommends that survey participants do not touch any jellyfish they encounter as some species can inflict a painful sting.
When Clowns Attack
Posted On 21 Nov 2007 at at 18:58 by somewhere
In solidarity with the people of Rossport and Nigeria, the Shell petrol station on Dalry Road, Edinburgh was blockaded for 2 hours on Saturday by 20 people including members of the Clown Army. The Comiston Shell Petrol Station was subjected to a nighttime redecoration....'From Oganiland to Rossport' was the message of anti-Shell protesters blockading Shell Petrol Station in Dalry Road, Edinburgh, this morning (Saturday 10 November).
The group of around twenty protesters shut off the petrol station by blocking entrances and hoisting signs. The protesters aimed to educate and entertain those prevented from accessing the station, bringing with them an array of musical instruments and games as well as information about Shell.
An activist explained. 'This action is not only a protest against Shell's atrocious environmental record in the Niger Delta and Rossport, County Mayo, but also a gesture of solidarity with those who have already suffered so much at the hands of Shell. Today marks the twelfth anniversary of the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa who was executed by the Nigerian government for his attempts to protect the lands of his people, the Ogani community. In addition this time last year the Irish Garda police baton charged a peaceful blockade of the Shell refinery in Rossport, injuring unarmed members of the Rossport community who were peacefully trying to protect their homes from commercial exploitation. We stand in support of these brave people and aim to draw attention to the worldwide issue of Shell's violation of both human rights and the health of our planet in pursuit of profit'
Also attending the blockade was a gaggle of clowns from the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army, who brought a sense of comic festivity to the otherwise somber anniversary.
Sergeant Toast explained: 'We clowns represent the sane in an insane world, where the profit of multinational companies comes before the rights and lives of communities. Even the likes of Shell and their actions in the world cannot quell our sense of the joyousness and beauty of life and our determination to replace these commercial values with out own-those of playfulness, freedom and love. Join the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army and help us protect our world and freedoms!
The Rossport community of County Mayo, Ireland, have since 2000 waged an ongoing resistance to the attempts of Shell to turn their coast-land into the site of a toxic refinery with a high pressure gas pipeline which will cut through the community, in same cases running just 70metres from peoples homes. The 'Rossport 5'-farmers who refused to obey a compulsory purchase order to seize their land-were imprisoned in 2005, and their efforts are supported by the whole community, worthy of nation wide and international support for the struggle they are bravely maintaining. (www.struggle.ws/rsc, www.shelltosea.com)
Nigeria-On November 10th 1995 Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight Ogoni colleagues were executed by the Nigerian state for campaigning against the devastation of the Niger Delta by oil companies, especially Shell and Chevron. (www.remembersarowiwa.com)
In an unrelated incident the Shell petrol station at Comiston was targeted in a night time attack. Messages were spray painted, locks were glued and the petrol pump dials rendered unreadable.
